It is best that each student has his own device for online-learning. If this is not possible, he can share with other members of your household, but a schedule of use will have to be worked out. Once we finalize the class schedule, we will communicate it to you so that you can have a better idea of how to optimize the use of your devices at home.
We recommend that the device to be used for online-learning be a laptop or desktop. Tablets are also functional (especially for younger learners), and when paired with a keyboard, they can easily substitute for a laptop or desktop. We do not recommend using handheld devices and smartphones for online-learning.
A standard audio headset (with microphone) and webcam are also required. A mouse and stylus (for tablets) are optional.
The table below provides our suggested configuration for both Windows and Mac computers. The “Good” configuration meets the basic requirements for online-learning. The “Better” configuration is recommended if you will purchase a new unit.
A minimum download speed of 2 to 3 Mbps for a single user is required. (Internet speed is measured in Mbps or Megabits per second.) Two Mbps is commonly the speed associated with a basic DSL or cellular connection. Wired connection with the use of a cable or fiber optics service is more reliable and secure. However, the use of wireless connection is more convenient. If your son’s internet speed is less than 2 Mbps, he can expect connectivity issues during our online classes.
