The Sports Program

PAREF Southridge recognizes the importance of a holistic formation of the human person. Man is educated in both mind and body. Therefore, the school gives value not only in his intellectual pursuits but also in his health and physical development. The school provides formation in the latter field through our Comprehensive Sports and Physical Activity Program (CSPAP) with two main channels: the Physical Education Curriculum and the Sports Program.

The Southridge Physical Education (PE) program aims for physical development. It means enhancing all the potentials of the human body in such a way that it achieves its optimum capability of fulfilling its functions such as performing daily work and playing sports and games that are ably and easily carried out when the body is fit, well and healthy.

All other components of a student's life such as intellect, social skills, emotional health, and spiritual well-being depend much on how well he feels about his body. Physical Education must be able to gear its goals and activities to strengthen the qualities of the body and extend this towards fulfilling the needs of the soul thus providing the student a high quality of life.

The Southridge Physical Education program is geared towards the achievement of the following aims:

  1. Apply movement concepts and principles of learning and development of motor skills;
  2. Show competency in many movement forms;
  3. Exhibit a physically active lifestyle;
  4. Maintain a health-enhancing level of fitness;
  5. Demonstrate understanding and respect for differences among people in physical activity settings;
  6. Practice responsible personal and social behavior in physical activity settings; and
  7. Provide opportunities for enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and social interaction through physical activities.

In addition, Southridge recognizes different sports as legitimate venues for personal formation of students and thus supports the formation of sports varsity, developmental teams and clubs. We believe that it is in the natural setting of sports where the students are most relaxed and truly themselves that they can learn many lessons for character formation. We aim to inculcate among our players the Southridge ideals using athletics and sports as the media.

The various sports teams are allowed to carry the school’s official name and represent the institution in inter-scholastic athletic competitions. The school lends its good name to these teams because it extends its formative responsibility to the students who comprise the varsity teams.

Sports as means to develop Character / Values Formation

The primary purpose of establishing the CSPAP is the development of character and values formation of the students through physical education and athletics.  The program provides educational experiences that teach practical and positive lifelong lessons to our students. We teach them the importance of fitness, health, striving to win and at the same time the grace in losing.

Although all virtues are fostered among and practiced by our students, the CSPAP highlights selected virtues of a Southridge gentleman that have an evident application in the field of sports: fortitude, self-discipline, and responsibility. We also try to instil the values of teamwork, sportsmanship, citizenship, dedication, commitment, fairness, patience, perseverance and respect for self and others.

Moreover, we give prime importance to the formation of the teachers, coaches and moderators of our sports teams. We support our students with good role models and the staff is made aware of the special role they play in the athletes’ lives. We look for and equip competent and dedicated coaches with the necessary knowledge and tools in instilling character formation techniques to our athletes in connection with the medium they are most familiar with, which is Sports.
